«I will never sign what Hitler with Stalin have signed. I will never confirm that Romania’s border passes on Prut River», declared Basescu on one of the private television channels, answering the question concerning the possibility to conclude a Moldovan-Romanian border treaty.
Basescu noted that Romania recognized in due time the border remained after the Second World War, having underlined, at the same time, that it is excluded to have a discussion with Moldova concerning a border treaty. «There may be discussions about a contract, an agreement concerning the border regime, but, there is no way I can discuss an agreement based on which I will confirm that the border passes from here to there», emphasized the head of the Romanian state.
Earlier, Basescu also declared about his refusal to sign a border treaty with Moldova. «Who can imagine that the head of the Romanian state will sign an agreement, which would legalize «Ribbentrop-Molotov» Pact? Only the one who can not understand with his own mind what means the responsibility of the head of the Romanian state», declared Romanian President on 15 May 2009.
Moldova remains the unique country, neighboring Romania, with which the official Bucharest refuses to sign a border treaty. According to the information of the Romanian Presidential Administration, the general length of the Moldovan-Romanian border is 681,3 km. At the same time, the data, provided by the Moldovan borderline service, specify that the length of the same border is by circa three km more.
